Closed platforms vs. Open platforms
From radio announcements to smartphone notifications, our world has created a sense of ubiquitous connectivity. The idea that we are always connected and always on. My media communications professor at Uni suggests that we are IN the media. Is he right?
Closed media treats the public as a media receiver while open media treats the public as a collective partner. In previous generations, information was released by one media platform to an audience in a controlled manner. Now, information can be released by many medias to an audience in an uncontrolled manner. This is called an open platform. This key difference makes it challenging for previous generations to adapt.
There are pros and cons to both platforms. Closed platforms allow for the owners to have complete control over the platform, content and user. An example of this type of platform is the Apple IPhone. Though Apple has control over the platform, users lack the freedom to explore their creativity with the hardware and software. (Trust me, I am an IPhone user so this is hard for me to accept as well)
On the other hand, open platforms like android lack control over the platform and information. Everything is at the hands of the user. The experimentation and individuality is endless. This may be a risk for the owners of the platform but this may be the future of technology.

This is interesting. I too am writing about Apples closed systems vs other open systems. After researching into this more, I couldn’t help but sit and question all the products I use every day, from my Ipad to Iphone, Mac and Ipod… we are limited and it’s restricting (I really like this point) our creative freedom. It makes me wonder what would happen if Apple were to become open an open platform. Would apple cease to exist as the apple we know today? Great blog. The conflict between open and closed source platforms is ongoing. People are definitely divided when it comes to this topic.
